I'd like to invite you to participate and/or watch our "roda de choro" Sunday, July 24 and August 14, at 11:45 am-1:00 pm at the Musical Offering (743 Custer, Evanston). It is FREE and open to the public, and most of all, a lot of fun to play and to listen.
A "roda" is a social event as well as a musical one. This is a monthly event, open to the public, so that students of the Chicago Choro Club can practice the repertoire they are learning in class as well as explore new music. As the school grows, we hope to have weekly rodas de choro for the students, and keep the monthly roda for the community.
If you are not familiar with choro, it is a musical cousin of samba. It is playable on virtually every instrument, and whether musicians are "classically" trained or play jazz, they will find a whole new wonderful rhythmical world when they begin to play choro.

Neal has a deep passion for Brazilian music and has created a fantastic trio just for this performance, with John Beard (on 7-string guitar and cavaquinho -- a Brazilian ukelele) and the groovy percussionist, Heitor Garcia. They will be performing sambas and choro music (an early popular style in Brazil which blended African and European influences -- kind of analogous to ragtime in the States). This will be a spectacular night. I usually include a link in these notices for you to hear a selection from this weeks' artists ... but this group has never performed together! Extra cool, huh? You'll have to come this Thursday to hear Neal with John and Heitor –- an exciting ensemble we will all be hearing together for the first time. I can't wait! I hope you can make it!

Alright, this is going to be a dreamy night at the Whiskey Lounge. Face it: This Thursday you can't afford to go to Rio, right? So come to the Whiskey Lounge instead. We are honored to have the fantastic Copacabana Trio, bringing incredible Brazilian music to our stage. This group boasts two outstanding vocalists. Bandleader Luciano N Antonio is a formidable guitarist with a pure, gentle voice which blends so perfectly with the soulful, sweet singing of the amazing Neusa Sauer. Rounding out the trio is master Brazilian percussionist Heitor Garcia, who will provide all manner of exotic rhythmic colors. Where better to hear such a delicate, delicious mix but at the intimate Whiskey Lounge? If you are a fan of Brazilian music as I am, you will not want to miss this special night. BTW this performance comes with a personal significance for Béa and me: Neusa sang at our wedding! You don't ask just anyone to sing at your wedding! She's incredible. I am so thrilled to have her be part of this series. And after all these years Neusa sounds — and is — just as beautiful! Come join us!!

Original or cover songs performed by Alba Guerra (Argentina), Alberto Sanabria (Paraguay); Alfonso Chacón and Nelson Sosa (Chile); Diana Mosquera and Marieth Quintero (Colombia); Hugo Treviño and Pedro Rodriguez (Mexico) and Gian Luca Ferme (Italy, performing rhythms from Brazil, Venezuela). Brazilian Brunch at the Parrot Cage
Summer Sambas! The historic Parrot Cage Restaurant at Chicago's South Shore Cultural Center is the location for the First Annual Brazilian Brunch, hosted by SmoothJazzChicago,net's Rick O'Dell and BrazilClubUSA.com's Scott Adams on Sunday August 25th, 2013.
Sunday Brunch at The Parrot Cage is a time-honored tradition for fans of Jazz and Brazilian music: Rick O'Dell regularly hosts 'The Smooth Jazz Sunday Brunch' with special musical guests including Nick Colionne and Lisa McClowry. For the Brazilian Brunch, Chicago's most popular Brazilian singer Paulinho Garcia will perform.
